The Fifth Element
Leeloo This page is dedicated to one of my favorite films of all time - "The Fifth Element". It was written & directed by Luc Besson and starred Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Chris Tucker and Gary Oldman.

The film also has some other familiar faces but the above names are the most renowned and have the most screen-time.

My only recommendation before you sit down to watch T5E is to keep in mind that Luc is out to have a good time and do some art-sy things at the same time.

Other than that, I think every person should see The Fifth Element for themselves and form their own opinions.

Why I love "The Fifth Element" so much

Duplicity Luc spends a severe amount of time in the movie on scenes where there are "parallel" conversations/actions going on simultaneously at different locations/settings.

Eye Candy The 3D traffic scenes are some of my favorite sci-fi effects. Mr. Besson has a good variety of traffic -- with all the vehicle types you would expect to see on the "road".

Humor Some of it is blatant, some is implied. I've really grown to love Luc's sense of humor. Most of this movie is tongue-in-cheek. Much of what I've seen people putting on "goofs & blunders" pages falls under what I consider to be "planned humor" -- it's supposed to be there.

Attention to Detail Admittedly, there are several aspects of the film (such as the costumes for the Mangalores) that lack finesse. However, Luc makes sure he gets lots of quick-glances and gestures from his actors -- the little touches that let you know he's concerned about every part of the film.

The Hover-Junk My absolute favorite part of the whole film is when Korben orders "out" for Thai food. When he's done eating, Mr. Kim pulls away from the window and heads into traffic in a hover-junk (the familiar oriental boat now modified to navigate the 3D traffic lanes of a 21st century city). Superb! And he sets about pulling up the old car tire that he uses for a bumper while oily-blue smoke billows out of the exhaust port. Absolutely exquisite! It has eye candy, humor, and attention to detail -- all in seconds of film. I love it!

Dance of the Mugger I laugh every time I see it. I can't help it.

Acting Bruce is his usual "blow up everything" self. Milla is a believeable "just woke up after 5000 years fragile super-being". Chris is superb as the "over-the-top, in-your-face DJ superstar". Ian is the meek priest. Gary is his standard "psychotic killer with a little ego problem" character (with a lot of civility when Mr. Evil calls). Everybody's great -- no Oscar performances here -- but who cares?
